#3 L'Oreal Excellence Creme. In this color box is the best conditioner. I like the colorant itself but they discontinued my preferred color "mahogany brown" which was a red/brown. #4 Redken Color Extend Conditioner. My personal preference for conditioner is one with a thick viscosity so that it sticks to my hair before rinsing and one that leaves my hair which is very thick and frizzy, calm, manageable and silky soft. #7 Garnier Nutrisse. This color has a nice perfumy smell and colors well. It doesn't last as long as the previous brands and the amount of conditioner given is skimpy. But I prefer their dark chestnut brown to the rest of the colorant candidates.
Price varies: $4.99 - $7.99.

#8 Just for Men. 5 minutes to color. How can you beat that? It's not just for men. I use their color for touch-ups. Often cheaper than the glam brands, I can use a little, store the rest and in 5 minutes have full coverage again. Price varies from $3.99 - $6.99. Can be bought in stores.

#9 Garnier Fructis Fortifying Cream Conditioner for Color Treated Hair. This is similar to the conditioner provided in the color boxes. It has a sweet perfumy smell and applies nice and smooth. Creating hair that is shiny, soft, manageable and beautiful. Price varies from $2.99 - $4.99.

#10 Shen Min Advanced Formula Vitamins for Healthy Hair. The jury is still out in that I have only just begun to take these vitamins but they get on the list for being an interesting hair color prevention product. Supposedly these chinese herbal vitamins not only stimulate hair growth but also restore graying hair to its natural color. Hmmm. It is Pricey at $22.95. You can find them at Folica.com

For those of you who are stumped on what to get that special Kate or that dashing Dan, here are a few gift giving tips to help you navigate through Valentine times.
1. Understand that Valentine's Day gift giving is ALL about showing how much you care, not necessarily by the size of the gift(not unless we're speaking in carats) but rather in the thought. Be romantic.
2. Think of the intended recipient. Who are they what makes them tick. What makes them laugh? What brings them joy? If they like flowers, which ones specifically? What is their favorite color? Maybe they love eclairs from a local bakery. Or would rather hit a disco and dance the night away. Perhaps a nice dinner out would do. Whatever you decide, make the most of it. Even if it is pizza from Dominoes and a rented movie, create a special ambiance. Light some candles, pour some wine, cuddle up under a blanket.
3. How do you fit into the picture? Who are you to this person? Love? Friend? Admirer? Then you must choose an appropriate gift. It's January. The beginning of a New Year. Time to think of goals and aspirations. Where do you want to be. Who do you want to be. I am a productive person. I feel low when I am not productive or have a lack of motivation. So this year, is all about productivity. Think Rosie the Riveter. Give 100% to everything and anything that you do, whether it is volunteering at a school, or participating at an event, performing on stage, interviewing for a new position, working, exercising, or spending time with family. Make sure you make the most of the situation you are in. Release old worn baggage that wears you down, toss out your insecurities and fears, and face the world standing tall.

One of my good friends from California always got her Christmas shopping done before thanksgiving. In fact I think for many years she was done before Halloween. It always psyched me out. For I am a last minute shopper. I don't have time to think so far ahead. I need to make my list. Then think about price. Then think about where to go shopping and, really, who wants to do any of that in the summer?

The Red Sox that's who. I know. Not another sox fan who has to say Woo- Hoo. Look at them go. You see when you have a team that works this hard and fans who support them year in and out. When they finally show what they are made of - you have to yell WOO-HOO.

My Dad took me to see my first Sox game. Yaz and Fiske....my Dad yelling at the top of his lungs...popcorn....hotdogs....inning after inning, marking the scores.

October is the MONTH OF PINK. Pink Ribbons that is. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each of us has been touched by this horrible disease. A disease that takes the lives of so many women. Each year, more money is raised to find a cure, to help victims, to create awareness, to fund testing, to gain peace in so many lives.

I lost my mother to breast cancer 16 years ago. I had no idea when she was diagnosed that I would lose her only one year later. It was tragically devastating. She was a strong and vibrant woman, who loved people, who worked hard, who cared deeply about family and friends. When she left this world , she left a void in so many lives. She died in September. She loved autumn leaves and the coolness of the air. This time of year I think of her more often and wish she were here to share in my life.

There are many organizations doing great work to find a cure, to beat the disease and support the victims, survivors and their families. Please take a moment to link into some of these organizations and see what they are doing. The Month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And for a lot of us, who have been touched by breast cancer, it is a painful reminder of things lost. At the same time it is all about 2nd chances and life renewed. My mother died of breast cancer 15 years ago. At that time, even though she was accepted into clinical trials, there was not a lot of choice and little hope. She chose to forgo the mastectomy, according to her doctors the tumor was hidden behind her breast plate anyway. She underwent many months of harsh, radiation, chemotherapy, heat, and radio frequency treatments, most of them just poking sticks in the dark. In the end she lived one year from her diagnosis and left a family in shock.
That's the angry 20 year-old who was left behind, talking. The older and wiser version sees the benefit in trials and research and knows that the doctors who treated my mother were trying their best with the tools that they had.
That's why it is so important for those of us affected to not forget, to give our support to those organizations and companies who support Breast Cancer Awareness.

The New Hampshire motto rings clearer for me these days. Live Free says to me... Live life to the fullest. Live without boundaries. Breakdown the walls. Live without suppression. Live without inhibition. I am a person who lives with boundaries. I create them and build them up and live inside them unitl I start feeling claustrophic and then I break them down. Only to build them up again in different forms. Why? I am made that way. I like systems though I rebel against them. I feel most comfortable with a routine and knowledge of where I am going and what I am doing here.

What does this have to do with shopping? Well, I will tell you. Shopping to me is a freeing experience. You gain and lose control of your life and surroundings. You redefine yourself and often breakfree of the constraints of the everyday. You build your castle and then you break it down and rebuild it. Trade has always been apart of human existence. It is a natural way of being for most women. Just think of the ideology of hunters and gatherers. Hunter were men. Nomadic, independent, physical. Gatherers were the women. Domestic, acquirers, nurturers.

Water - Drink it up

Water Water everywhere and not a drop to drink.

Water is one of the three key elements to living. In an episode of CSI Grissom states that a person can last 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food.

If you had asked my mother in the 1960's whether she thought it were possible that we would be paying $1.60 for a 16 oz bottle of water. She would have laughed and laughed. Now in 2004 there are so many different types of "spring" "filtered" "flavored" water.

My personal favorite is Evian as I have stated before. Though I also drink Dasani, Poland Springs, and Belmont Springs.

So much of my money goes to hair products. Shampoos that lift, balance, de-frizz, thicken, control, enliven, shine, and de-tox. Conditioner with deep-heat, cool control, oil, and water. I have tried gels, and creams, and sticks, and wax. I have tried products like Dippity Do that cost $1.99 for a huge jar and lasts forever and works like starch. Ok So I know I already spoke to this product and really how much can you say about a new product...but for those of you men and women who color their hair every month, you need this product. EZcolour. It is easy. I mean EZ. You mix your color , put it in the brush, squeeze it out and brush it in. I have to color my hair every 4 weeks. I normally get color flicks everywhere, it is a true hair coloring mess, but with this brush I get great coverage and no destruction in my bathroom. I have used Clairol, L'Oreal, Herbal Essence, NiceNEasy, Roots (English brand) and it works with all. The handle is sized small enough for dainty hands and yet large enough to fully load 4 oz of fluid.

This POUCH company is great. I ordered sheer organza bags. They comce in all sorts of colors, my preference was the gold organza. They come in different sizes with a ribbon tie. The customer service was great.

These are also great bags for wedding, birthday party or shower giveaways.

On the New Basics site, which has the super cool EZcolour Hair Coloring Brush, I found a barrette that is pretty and not so expensive and can hold my very thick hair. Becauce my hair is so thick and also straight, either I find the barrette will slide out or I end up breaking the clasp. This barrette actually works with thick hair and the clasp is sturdy. I have both the interleaf and the vine. Worth the extra bucks.

My girlfriend who captains a sailboat, had me use her favorite towel...I say a towel is a towel. She says no, this is no ordinary towel.

Check this out. An "at-home" hair coloring applicator. $5.99. I have tried the L'oreal Comb top, the Igia ColornGO, and none of them compare to this product. It is EASY to use. Buy your favorite color or the one on sale closest to your favorite color, mix it up, fill the bottle base, pump out the color. You have to squeeze the bottle to get the color out, but it doesn't drip or flick or ooze. Very cool.
I have straight, med length hair and it did a great job of getting the roots, and at the same time I colored all the way to the ends...without pulling out my hair or getting it on my clothes. Amazing. I am hooked for life.
